Information and Ideas: Central Ideas, Evidence, and Inferences

Information and Ideas makes up roughly a quarter of the Reading and Writing section, and it tests something fundamental: can you accurately identify what a short passage says, what evidence supports it, and what can reasonably be inferred from it? Unlike Craft and Structure, this domain rarely asks about word choice or organization — it asks about content.

The three question types in this domain — central ideas and details, command of evidence, and inferences — share a common trap: answer choices that sound plausible but go slightly beyond, or fall slightly short of, what the passage actually supports. Learning to spot that gap is the core skill this page teaches.

Central ideas and details

These questions ask you to identify the main point of a passage or to locate a specific detail that serves that point. Because passages are so short, the central idea is almost always stated or strongly implied in the first sentence or two — writers don't have room to bury the lede. Read the opening carefully, then check that the rest of the passage supports rather than contradicts your initial read.

A common wrong-answer pattern is the choice that restates a true detail from the passage but isn't actually the main point. If a passage spends four sentences arguing that a policy failed and mentions in passing that it was expensive, an answer choice claiming 'the passage argues the policy was too costly' is a detail dressed up as a main idea. Always ask which idea the other sentences are working to support.

Command of evidence: textual

Textual evidence questions give you a claim and ask which quotation or paraphrased detail from the passage best supports it. The key move is to treat the claim as fixed and test each answer choice against it, rather than trying to remember everything the passage said and guess which answer fits. Eliminate any choice that is true but irrelevant to the specific claim in the question — that's the most common trap.

Sometimes the question works in reverse, giving you a piece of evidence and asking what claim it supports. Treat this the same way: state in your own words what the evidence shows before you look at the answer choices, so you're not swayed by a choice that merely reuses vocabulary from the passage without matching its logic.

Command of evidence: quantitative (graphs and tables)

Some Information and Ideas questions pair a short passage with a graph or table and ask which data point would best support, weaken, or complete the argument in the passage. Start by reading the passage's claim independently of the graph, then look at the graph's axes and units before you look at the answer choices — many wrong answers rely on you misreading what's actually being measured.

Watch for answer choices that describe a real trend in the data but don't connect to the specific claim being tested. If the passage argues that a city's water use decreased because of a new conservation law, a data point showing that a neighboring city's population grew is irrelevant even if it's an accurate read of the chart. The right answer always closes the specific logical gap the question asks about.

Inferences

Inference questions ask what the passage implies but does not directly state. These are frequently presented as 'the author would most likely agree with' or completed with a sentence like 'This suggests that ____.' The correct answer must be a small, logical step from the passage's actual content — not a bold new claim, and not something you'd need outside knowledge to reach.

A useful test: for each answer choice, ask whether someone who fully agreed with the passage could also deny the answer choice without contradicting themselves. If they could deny it and still agree with the passage, the choice goes too far. If the passage gives you no basis to decide either way, the choice is unsupported rather than inferred.

Worked example

Marine biologists studying coral reefs near a small island noticed something unusual: reefs closest to a longstanding no-fishing zone hosted noticeably larger fish populations than reefs just a few hundred meters away, despite similar water temperature and depth. The only significant difference between the sites was the presence of the fishing restriction. Which choice best describes what the passage implies about the no-fishing zone? A) It has had no measurable effect on fish populations. B) It is likely a contributing factor to the larger fish populations nearby. C) It has caused water temperatures to rise in nearby reefs. D) It should be expanded to cover the entire island's coastline.

  1. Identify what's explicitly stated: fish populations are larger near the no-fishing zone, and the sites are otherwise similar.
  2. Eliminate A, since it directly contradicts the described difference in fish populations.
  3. Eliminate C, since temperature was explicitly said to be similar between sites — nothing suggests the zone affected temperature.
  4. Eliminate D, since expanding the zone is a policy recommendation the passage never makes or supports.
  5. B is the smallest logical step: with only one meaningful difference between sites, the passage implies that difference plausibly contributes to the outcome.

Answer: B — it's the only choice that stays within what the passage's comparison actually supports.

A second worked example: textual evidence

Worked example

A city council member argues that the town's new bike-lane network has reduced car traffic downtown. Which finding, if true, would best support her claim? A) A survey shows most residents own a bicycle. B) Traffic counts on downtown streets fell 15% in the six months after the bike lanes opened. C) The bike lanes cost less to build than originally estimated. D) Neighboring towns are considering similar bike-lane projects.

  1. The claim to support is specifically that car traffic went down because of the bike lanes.
  2. A is about bicycle ownership, not about a change in car traffic — eliminate.
  3. C is about cost, not traffic — eliminate.
  4. D is about other towns' plans, which says nothing about this town's traffic — eliminate.
  5. B directly reports a drop in car traffic occurring after the bike lanes opened, which is exactly the kind of evidence the claim needs.

Answer: B — it is the only choice that reports a measured change in the specific thing the claim is about.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing an answer because it contains words copied from the passage, without checking that it matches the passage's logic.
  • Picking a true detail instead of the actual main idea.
  • Selecting evidence that is topically related but doesn't support the specific claim in the question.
  • Over-inferring — treating a plausible guess as if the passage guaranteed it.
  • Misreading a graph's axis labels or units before evaluating quantitative evidence answer choices.
