How the Digital SAT Math section is structured

Math is the second of the two sections on the Digital SAT, following Reading and Writing. It consists of two modules, each containing 22 questions to be completed in 35 minutes, for a total of 44 questions and 70 minutes of testing time.

The test is multistage adaptive: your performance on the first math module determines whether the second module presents a harder or easier mix of questions. Because scoring accounts for this adjustment, a student who receives the higher-difficulty second module and answers a similar proportion of questions correctly will typically end up with a higher scaled score than one who receives the easier module.

The vast majority of questions are multiple choice with four answer options, but roughly a quarter of the questions in each module are student-produced response (SPR) questions, often called 'fill-in' or grid-in questions, where you type a numeric answer instead of selecting one.

Calculator strategy

A calculator is permitted on every Math question on the Digital SAT — there is no longer a no-calculator portion. The testing platform includes a built-in graphing calculator powered by Desmos, which you can also use for scratch work, checking algebra, or graphing functions to estimate solutions. You may also bring an approved handheld calculator if you prefer a device you already know well.

The built-in Desmos calculator is worth practicing with well before test day. It can solve equations, plot systems to find intersection points, evaluate expressions, and even define functions and sliders, which makes it useful for far more than arithmetic. That said, on many algebra questions it is faster to work the algebra by hand than to type an expression into the calculator, so treat it as a tool for verification and for harder computational or graphical questions rather than a replacement for fluency with core skills.

Pacing on the Math section

Each Math module gives you 35 minutes for 22 questions, which works out to roughly 95 seconds per question on average. In practice, questions are not evenly difficult, so budget less time for straightforward one-step problems and save the extra minutes for multi-step word problems, systems of equations, or questions involving unfamiliar function notation.

A useful habit is to flag any question that takes longer than about two minutes, make your best attempt, and move on rather than getting stuck. The Digital SAT interface lets you mark questions for review and return to them later in the same module, so nothing is lost by moving forward and coming back if time allows.

Student-produced response (fill-in) questions

SPR questions ask you to type a numeric answer rather than pick from choices, which removes the option of working backward from answer choices. They accept answers as integers, decimals, or fractions, and the entry box has specific formatting rules — for example, mixed numbers must be entered as improper fractions or decimals, since entering '3 1/2' would be read as the fraction 31/2.

Because there are no answer choices to guide you, it's especially important to double-check that your final answer makes sense in context (a probability between 0 and 1, a length that's positive, a percentage under 100 unless the problem indicates growth beyond the original amount) before moving on.

How to study for SAT Math effectively

Start by taking a full-length, timed practice test to see which of the four domains costs you the most points, then spend the bulk of your study time on Algebra and Advanced Math since together they make up about 70% of the section. Within each domain, work through problems by sub-topic (for instance, all systems-of-equations questions in one sitting) so you can spot the small number of recurring question patterns each topic uses.

After every practice set, review every missed question by redoing it untimed and identifying whether the error was conceptual (you didn't know the method), a careless slip (arithmetic or misreading), or a pacing issue (you ran out of time).
